BRIDGE

INTERNATIONAL MATCHPOINT (imp) STRATEGY
PART 4:  SACRIFICE BIDDING, BALANCING, AND VULNERABILITY

1.  Sacrifice Bidding.  When we sacrifice in match point bridge a 500 penalty when the opponents can score a game worth 620 will usually result in a very good board. At IMP scoring it will be a 3 IMP swing. The risk of a phantom save, -500 instead of +100 (a 12 IMP swing) or down one too many 800 penalty instead of 620 game (a 5 IMP swing).  We need to be very conservative when we preemptive (Remember weak two bids are not pure preemtive bids).

2.  Balancing is about the same in IMP as it is in match points.  It is, however, a good idea to avoid down two doubled.

3.  Vulnerability.  We tend to be more aggressive when vulnerable at IMP scoring.  We should, however, avoid 800 or 1100 penalties.  We must also look out for inflicting 800 or 1100 penalties on the opponents.  Remember you are not the only one who stretch to get to game vulnerable.

I think that tomorrow I will summarize IMP strategy.
